I wanted to try and keep non anime related posts to a minimum but after seeing this I really wanted to post a few things. This can also apply to anime DVDs as well so the same principal applies. Now days when a high profile game is released there is nearly always a “limited edition” version that is sold alongside it for extra money, but you get a few extras along with the game. Usually this involves a DVD you never watch, a CD with audio you hardly ever listen to and some other trinkets. It has always felt a bit flat for me when looking at this. They never offer any reason to fork out the extra money. Thankfully they are trying to rectify that with games such as Farcry 2 that are starting to pick up on the whole “limited edition means more bonuses with the game” However largely the western world is failing at this. They consider the above mentioned DVD and CD that come with the game enough reason to charge sometimes $30 or more than the game alone.

Then you go places such as japan or korea. They laugh at the idea of simple limited editions. Not only that but i’m pretty sure they understand that if you make said LEs really limited (sometimes in the 1000’s, sometimes in the 10,000’s) and add excessive extras that they will sell at an insane rate regardless of the price. This is where the DJ Max series comes in. They have just announced a LE version of the new game DJ Max Portable Black Square. Not only is this excessiveness in it’s pure form, but it is REALLY limited. We’re talking only 1500 made here. This is what i’m talking about…

Look what you get here

  1. A limited cover for the game – may not sound exciting but its a good start
  2. Post Cards – again not exciting but getting better)
  3. Black Square bandana
  4. 4 CD OST of the game – this is where things pick up. The music to these games are incredible so you will listen to this a LOT
  5. Black Square portable speakers
  6. Full colour art book – again these are great and have some beautiful work in it
  7. Son of Sun “Special Gift” – No clue what this is so could be anything. Oh and son of sun is a song in the game, very awesome one at that.
  8. Giant black square (see what they did there?) carry cube to carry it all in
THAT my western friends is what a limited edition game should be like. Now the normal game on its own runs about $45 US. Now if my bad math and currency exchange rate skills are correct, this sells for $85 – 90 US. These babys will sell out in a day if not less. Don’t think this is the first time they’ve done something like this either oh no. Every DJ Max game, with the exception of Clazziquai Edition, has had its own LE. Here is the one for DJ Max Portable 2 that I own myself. Also note that there are 2 versions of the same package. Either you can pick the “Orpheus ~Night Black~” version or the “Orpheus ~Metallic Silver~” version. With this you got

  1. Special black (or silver) carry box that looks awesome on display
  2. 3 CD OST with lyrics in both english and korean depending on the song
  3. Puzzle with IDK how many peices
  4. 10 or so post cards that look real pretty
  5. Reflective foil game cover
  6. Full colour art book
  7. Hidden gift of 1 random NB Ranger mask – I say hidden because it really was hidden. You had to take everything out of the box, even the felt inside and pry up the little part of the cardboard on the very bottom and there it was waiting for you. Now that is a good idea. SUPRRISE GIFT!
Some can perhaps see the huge increase in quality with the LEs in those 2 pictures. I can’t wait to see what the next one will bring in regards to gifts and such. While anime DVDs have still yet to fully catch onto this excessiveness, the last time I can remember seeing something over the top like this was with the Kodomo no Jikan DVD 1 release which, for the first 25,000 people, got this awesome bonus (one which I was lucky enough to buy)
Yup thats right, you got Kokonoe’s red backpack complete with smily face button that you could put somewhere. Granted that this is primarly useless and a little creepy in a way but it’s a pretty good extra for ordering a dvd. Shame the other dvds never had anything like this in them. Just don’t go letting your little sister or another young girl wear it or else you may have some issues you need to come to terms with.
