Since the current amount of shows I am following is only around 2 or 3, I thought that mabye there are some of interest to people that have been missed, or not heard of. I’ll try to go by genre to help speed things along.
Action
Claymore – A show that is based around female demon hunters who are themselves half demon. Plenty of action, awesome fight scenes coupled with some very pretty visuals and a nice style to top it all off. As you can see from the picture below when the women use their demon powers their eyes turn yellow and cat like. The more power the use, the closer they become to turning into a demon themselves. Interesting no? If you’re a fan of this genre then this should be the first to check out on your list
Illena, Noel & Sophia fighting Terasa of the Faint Smile; my favorite character
Hellsing Ultimate – Hellsing has had a rather akward past when it comes to its animated version. While the original series was rather… ok… it was just so different from the manga that it never really sat well with me. Even back when I had never read any of the story and the final “villian” was as interchangable as a pair of clean underwear. Hellsing Ultimate fixed this and attempts to follow the manga a tad more closely. By which I mean sticks pretty damn close to (I assume, I only have the first 3 manga) Anyway each new OVA, 2 of which are apparently released each yeah, seems to condense roughly 2 books worth of material so It moves rather fast which is good. Again it has greaty quality, wonderful voice acting (japanese I mean of course) and a very distinct style to it that should be seen by all. Only thing is that it has a fair bit of blood in it so may not be suitable for youngens.
Rather big visual upgrade from when this was in the first series huh?
Slice Of Life / Comedy
Minami-ke – If you havn’t at least heard about this series then i’m not sure what I can say. Where have you been the past 1 1/2 years? This wonderful series follows the adventures of 3 sisters, the Minami sisters. Haruka is the eldest and the token sweet girl that always has a smile on her face. Kana is the blissful idiot who more often than not starts trouble for everyone else. Finally we have my personal favorite, Chiaki. She is the youngest and is rather cold and extremely straight foward with everyone except Haruka, whom she really adores and loves. Check out an episode and you will likely be hooked and want to finish the series.
Chiaki and her bear are awesome
Hidamari Sketch – Hidamari Sketch and its following second series Hidamari Sketch x365, like all Slice of Life comedies, follows 4 girls as they go through school and their lives back in the apartment complex they live in. You have Yuno AKA Yunocchi who is the young and nieve one, Miyako who is the energetic stupid one, Hiro who is the eldest (I think) and a motherly figure to the rest of the girls and Sae who always tries to be the “cool” one. The art is very unique and I love the artists work throughout the series. The faces, the jokes, the rather jittery nature of the show itself all come together into a nice blend.
Hyakko – Hyakko was a show that never really gained much attention for reasons unknown to me. The characters were interesting, the jokes were funny, there were many secondary characters and was just downright fun to watch. Also I may be a little bias because the voice actor who does Miu from Strawberry Marshmallow was in this as a main character, so the show is really like watching a grown up Miu with new friends. Very funny show that should be given a watch for sure
Aria – What more can be said about Aria other than it is 1 of the most fantastic series ever made. From beginning to end it is a masterpiece of anime that deserves every bit of praise it gets. If you like slice of life shows, and don’t mind slower paced shows then I cannot recommend this enough to you. The characters are adorable (athena!), the setting is actually a world I would LOVE to live in and the large amount of episodes (around 50) make this a winner for this genre.
Athena isn’t in this pic T.T
Sketchbook ~Full Color’s~ – This show didn’t get the attention it deserves when it was airing. There was almost no buzz about it that I could find and I still cannot understand it. A pretty fair description of the show would be “Aria, only at school” which is exactlly what it is. The characters, like aria, are adrorable and even now, Sora remains one of my favorite anime characters ever. It is of no coincidence either that the studio who made Aria, HAL Film Maker, are also behind this. It has their “slow pace style” all over it. Has a tiny bit more comedy in it than Aria does however. Another must watch.
All the Gang of Sketchbook, with Sora in the middle with blue hair
Drama / Romance
Mnemosyne – This show is rather hard to classify. I’m picking Drama because… well i’m not sure. There isn’t enough action to warrent it into that group even though there is a fair bit of it. Also it’s worth mentioning that this show is rather adult. Deffinatly wouldn’t let anyone under 15 or 16 watch this. Story is rather unique too that it follows a pair of immortal women who have a detective agency they run together. They pick up odd cases that interest them and try their best to solve them. There are 6 OVAs and each one takes place years after the preceding one. Meaning episode 1 starts in modern japan, and ends in a futuristic version of itself. Due to the girls being immortal they never age but everyone around them does. Characters who were only young when they met, are now old folk and have kids and grandkids of their own. Want something to do for 6 hours or want a show that stands out on its own? then pick up this series
Oh and if it matters, the middle and right hand girls kiss a few times too
Candy Boy – A great series that is unfortunatly almost over. Candy Boy is rather interesting too as the story only has 2 main characters and 2 secondary characters, 1 of which only appears for 2 episodes. Very basic plot that just works so well considering how simple the show is. The show follows of the lives of 2 sisters Yukino and Kanade in collage(I think) who are a little closer than most. They hold hands all the time, are always together and even sleep in the same bed holding hands. A little strange but there is a deep affection between the sisters that is refreshing to see in a show. Not only because they are related but because in all honesty this IS a romance show and the characters fit so well together. If you want a short (8, 17 minute episodes) and very sweet show and can deal with the incestuious undertones then this is a interesting and great show. Currently 1 of the shows i’m following very closely.
Kanade, Yukino and Sakuya
Spice and Wolf – A show I originaly picked up just to see what the big fuss was about and 20 minutes later, I was hooked. A phenominal show about a town-to-town merchant who through a series of events, befriends and starts traveling with Horo (or Holo) who is a wolf god in the body of a 15 year old girl. The opening song for this show i’ve shown here before and is just so pretty and sets the tone for the whole show. This deserves another series by far. I’m furry for Horo and soon, you will be too.
Koi Kaze – Much akin to Candy Boy in the way that this is a romance show involving a brother and sister. Yeah yeah I know what your saying to yourself right now. “You’re a sicko” and while you are correct about that, this show handles the subject of incest rather well. You see the effect it has on the characters and how they struggle to cope with it. While the production values for this series are rather low, as you can see below, it’s the story that really supports this show. Oh and talking about the art, is it just me or does the art style seem very much like Yug?
So that wraps up my quick little.. er.. thing about some shows you may of missed. If there are any others you’d like to see up here let me know and ill add them
